Paddling Pools North London: Free Spots for Families
There is a particular kind of summer afternoon in London when the flat is boiling, the kids are cross and you would pay almost anything for some cold water. The good news is you usually do not have to pay at all. This guide to paddling pools North London families can use covers free spots, many a short bus ride from Archway. The bad news is that they open and close with the seasons, break down, and get refurbished, so a bit of checking saves a wasted trip with a sweaty toddler.
Here is my honest round-up for families in N19, N6, N7 and nearby, with the caveats I would want someone to tell me before I set off.
First, the golden rule: check before you go
Every paddling pool and splash pad on this list is seasonal. Most run roughly from late spring to the end of August, often “weather permitting”, and any of them can close for repairs. Councils update their pages, so look the day before. I have linked the official page for each one so you can.
Paddling pools North London: the list
Hampstead Heath paddling pool (Parliament Hill)
The classic. It sits next to the Parliament Hill playground and athletics track, is about 30cm deep at its deepest, and is for children under 8 with an adult. When open, it usually runs daily from 10:30am to 5pm in summer, with staff on site. However, the City of London’s paddling pool page currently says it is closed until spring 2027. Keep an eye on that page for the reopening.
Bruce Castle Park and Lordship Recreation Ground (Tottenham)
Haringey runs free paddling pools at both. For summer 2026, Haringey’s paddling pools page listed them as open at weekends from late May, then 7 days a week from mid-July to the end of August, weather permitting. They are for children aged 8 and under, with an adult supervising. These are further from Archway, so they are more of a half-day outing than a quick dip.
Priory Park (Crouch End)
Priory Park has a paddling pool, but Haringey’s page says it is temporarily closed for a full refurbishment with no reopening date yet. Worth watching, as it is one of the closest to Archway. I am writing a separate guide to Priory Park in Crouch End for families.
Finsbury Park splash play
The splash play by the main playground was listed by Haringey as out of service while a drainage repair is awaited. Check the page before relying on it.
Water play in Islington parks
Islington does not have traditional paddling pools in the same way, but it does have splash features, which are often better for toddlers because there is no standing water. Islington Life’s guide to parks for water fun lists:
- Whittington Park (closest to Archway): sprinkler arches, buttons and jets from the ground.
- Highbury Fields: similar sprinklers and jets. Islington Council lists the Highbury water play as running 10am to 7pm, April to September.
- Barnard Park, Paradise Park, King Square Gardens and Rosemary Gardens, each with their own fountains and features.
For under-3s, these splash pads are often the easiest option: no swimming costume battles, just a spare set of clothes and a towel.
What to pack for a paddling pool trip
- Swimwear (Haringey asks that under-8s wear costumes) and swim nappies for babies
- Water shoes or old trainers. Haringey recommends beach shoes, and they save a lot of stubbed toes
- Water-resistant sun cream, hats and shade. The NHS has clear sun safety advice for children
- Plenty of drinking water and snacks, but eat away from the poolside where that is a rule
- A big towel, a dry bag and a full change of clothes
Most sites ban dogs, glass and smoking around the pools, and all of them expect an adult to supervise children at all times. Shallow water still needs your eyes on it.
Turn the trip into exercise for you
I am a coach, so of course I am going to sneak a workout in. You cannot leave the poolside, but you can use the journey and the waiting time:
- Walk at least one way. Walking to Whittington Park from Archway, or from the bus stop to the Heath, adds 20 to 40 minutes of brisk activity.
- Poolside “standing” set while they splash: 20 calf raises, 10 slow squats, 20-second wall sit against a fence post. Repeat 3 to 4 times over the visit.
- Carry the bag properly. A heavy kit bag is a farmer’s carry. Swap hands every few minutes, stand tall, and you are training your grip and core.
The NHS activity guidelines count moderate activity like brisk walking, so a summer of park trips adds up nicely.
When the pools are closed
For more than half the year, these pools are empty. That does not mean family activity has to stop. Indoor swimming at Archway, park games and active weekends all fill the gap. My post on active weekends with kids in Archway has year-round ideas, and if you want a bigger outdoor swim in summer, I am putting together a guide to Parliament Hill Lido.
And for you, the parent, a weatherproof weekly class means your own fitness does not depend on the British summer. My classes run indoors in a church hall in Archway. If summer heat and screaming kids leave you wound up, my SYP Release stress relief class, with pads and slam balls, is a satisfying way to let it out.
FAQs
Are paddling pools in North London free?
Yes. The council-run and City of London paddling pools and splash pads listed here are free and do not need booking. You only pay for things like the café or the lido.
When do North London paddling pools open?
Usually from late May or June until the end of August, often weekends first and then daily in the school holidays, weather permitting. Exact dates change every year, so check the council page.
What age are paddling pools for?
Most are for children aged 8 and under, and an adult must stay with them. Older children are better suited to a lido or a leisure centre pool.
Is the Parliament Hill paddling pool open?
The City of London says the Hampstead Heath paddling pool is closed until spring 2027. Check its page for updates before planning a trip.
