Family Fitness Activities in North London
Weekends with kids in London can go one of two ways: an expensive day out that leaves everyone tired and cross, or a day stuck indoors that leaves everyone tired and cross. There is a better middle ground. North London is packed with free or cheap family fitness activities that get everyone moving, burn off the kids’ energy and leave you feeling better too. I have lived and coached in Archway for over 10 years, and these are the ones I recommend to the parents in my classes.
What makes a good family activity?
Before the list, a quick filter. The best family fitness activities are:
- Cheap or free, so you can do them every week, not once a year.
- Scalable, so a 4-year-old and a 40-year-old can both join in.
- Close to home, because a long journey kills the mood before you start.
- Fun first. If the kids enjoy it, they will ask to go again.
The NHS recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week and children aged 5 to 18 average at least 60 minutes a day (see the NHS guidelines for adults and for children and young people). A couple of active family outings a week covers a big chunk of both.
Family fitness activities in North London
1. Junior parkrun
Free, friendly and brilliant for getting kids running. Islington has two junior parkruns on Sunday mornings, at Highbury Fields and Caledonian Park: 2km events for children aged 4 to 14, and kids can walk, jog or run (details on Islington Life). Parents run alongside younger children, so you get a jog in too. Both are a short bus or tube ride from Archway.
2. Swimming at Archway Leisure Centre
When the weather is grim, the pool is a lifesaver. Archway Leisure Centre has a leisure pool with a sloping beach entry, a flume and a wave machine, which makes it a lot more fun for kids than lane swimming (see Better’s Archway pool page for sessions). Swimming is great low-impact exercise for parents with achy knees, too.
3. Parliament Hill Lido
For braver families. The lido on Hampstead Heath is a 60-metre open-air, unheated pool that opens every day of the year, and under 8s must be supervised by an adult in the water (check the City of London lido page for times and rules). A summer favourite, and a proper adventure for older kids in the cooler months.
4. Hampstead Heath hills and woods
Run up Parliament Hill, roll down it, play hide and seek in the woods and finish at a café. My guide to a Hampstead Heath family day out has a full plan.
5. Highgate Wood
Ancient woodland, easy paths and space for den building and chasing games. It is one of the most child-friendly green spaces near Archway. See my post on Highgate Wood with kids.
6. The Parkland Walk
An old railway line turned into a green walking and cycling path. It is mostly flat, which makes it perfect for scooters, balance bikes and tired little legs.
7. Family bike rides
Start on quiet paths and parks before tackling roads. Cycling is a skill that sets kids up for independence later.
8. Park workouts and games
Waterlow Park, Whittington Park and the smaller green spaces around Archway are perfect for tag games, races and a quick parent workout on the benches while the kids play.
Free activities you can do at home
Not every activity needs a trip out. On busy weeks, try:
- A 15-minute living room circuit with the kids (squats, star jumps, bear crawls).
- A family dance party after tea.
- A weekly step challenge with a chart on the fridge.
- A garden or balcony “sports day” with egg and spoon and sack races.
A simple family activity plan for the week
| When | Activity | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday after school | Park games or scoot home the long way | 20 to 30 minutes |
| Midweek evening | Living room circuit or dance party | 15 minutes |
| Saturday | Swim or bike ride | 45 to 60 minutes |
| Sunday morning | Junior parkrun or a big walk on the Heath | 1 to 2 hours |
Keep it realistic. If you only manage the Sunday outing some weeks, that is still a win.
If anyone in the family has a health condition or an injury, check with your GP or physio before trying something new, and pick the gentler options.
Where a bootcamp class fits
Family activities keep everyone moving, but most parents also need a bit of focused training for themselves: strength for lifting kids and shopping, fitness to keep up on the Heath, and an hour of headspace. That is what my bootcamp classes are for. Lots of parents tell me they enjoy family days more once they are fitter, because they are not the one lagging behind. If you fancy something different, my SYP Box Fit beginner boxing class is a fun way in, with no sparring.
FAQs
What are some family fitness activities?
Walking, cycling, swimming, park games, junior parkrun, dancing at home, family step challenges and simple circuits like squats and star jumps are all easy to do together and suit different ages.
How can my family get fit together?
Plan two or three short active sessions a week, mix outings with quick home workouts, let the kids pick some activities and make it a regular part of the week rather than a one-off.
What are free things to do with kids in North London?
Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood, Waterlow Park, the Parkland Walk and the many local playgrounds are all free. Junior parkrun is free too, and you just register once online.
What is a good exercise for the whole family?
Brisk walking is the easiest. It needs no kit, everyone can do it and you can chat as you go. Swimming and cycling are great next steps.
