Bootcamp Highgate: Small-Group Classes by Archway Road
If you have been looking for a bootcamp Highgate parents can fit around family life, you do not have to go far. My SYP Bootcamp classes run indoors at a church hall in Archway, London N19, just down the hill from Highgate along Archway Road. For many Highgate parents it is a short walk or a quick bus ride. If you have been searching for a bootcamp in Highgate that is friendly, small and beginner friendly, this post explains how to get there, what a class looks like and who it suits.
A bootcamp in Highgate's backyard
I have been a personal trainer in Archway for over 10 years, and I started training at 15. Over that time I have worked with plenty of people from Highgate, and the same thing comes up again and again: they want to train, but they do not want a long journey or a big, impersonal gym. When I set up SYP Bootcamp, I wanted something local enough that getting there is never the reason you skip it.
From Highgate Village or the top of Archway Road, the class is downhill all the way, so the walk there doubles as a warm-up. If you are pushed for time, there are buses along Archway Road, and Highgate tube station is one stop from Archway on the Northern line. Walking home back up the hill is optional extra training.
What to expect from a bootcamp Highgate parents can actually stick to
The classes are built for busy mums and dads. Here are the basics:
45-minute sessions. Long enough to work properly, short enough to fit before work, after drop-off or after bedtime.
Maximum 10 people. I keep groups small so I can watch your technique, adjust exercises and get to know you.
Indoors. No cancelled sessions because of rain, and no training in the dark on wet grass in winter.
All fitness levels. Every exercise has an easier and a harder version. Beginners are very welcome.
£15 per class. No long contract, so you can see how it fits your week first.
For class times, see this week's class times on the booking page.
What happens in a class
Every session follows a simple structure so you always know what is coming:
Warm-up. Easy movement to loosen up your hips, shoulders and back, and get your heart rate up gradually.
Strength work. Squats, lunges, presses, rows and core exercises using bodyweight and simple equipment. This is the part that helps with everyday parent life: lifting kids, carrying shopping and folding buggies.
Conditioning. Short intervals that get you a bit out of breath. You set the pace. Nobody is competing.
Cool-down. A few minutes of stretching and breathing before you head back up the hill.
The mix of strength and cardio is deliberate. The NHS recommends that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, plus strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups on at least 2 days a week. A couple of classes a week covers your strength days, and walking to and from Highgate helps with the rest.
Is a small-group bootcamp right for you?
A bootcamp is not for everyone, and that is fine. In my experience it suits Highgate parents who:
Want structure without having to plan their own workouts.
Have not trained for a while and want a supportive way back in.
Find it hard to stay motivated training alone.
Want a coach checking their form without the cost of weekly one-to-one sessions.
If you are still deciding, my post on whether fitness bootcamps are worth it goes through the pros and cons honestly. And if you want to know more about how the classes are designed around family life, read my guide to fitness classes for busy parents in Archway.
One important note. If you have recently had a baby, have an injury or have back pain, please check with your GP or physio before starting a new exercise routine. Once you have the go-ahead, tell me before class and I will adapt the exercises for you.
Tips for your first class
Arrive a few minutes early so I can say hello and ask about any injuries or concerns.
Wear comfortable clothes and trainers and bring a water bottle and a small towel.
Go at your own pace. The first session is about learning the movements, not proving anything.
Book your next one before you leave. The parents who keep going are the ones who make it a regular slot in the week.
